Egg Move Mentoring:

A Complete Guide for Scarlet/Violet Version

In Scarlet/Violet it is possible to teach egg moves to Pokémon who were not originally bred with them! This guide will give you step-by-step instructions.

As a demonstration, I'll teach my Cinccino the egg move Tidy Up. Tidy Up is only learnable by Maushold, Furret and Cinccino. Maushold learns it by level-up; Furret and Cinccino only learn it as an egg move through breeding with Maushold. Sesame, my Cinccino, was not bred with Tidy Up as an egg move and therefore would not normally be able to learn it.

  1. First, verify that your Pokémon can learn the desired move as an egg move in Scarlet/Violet. Other kinds of moves, like level-up and TM moves, cannot be learned using this method! Also, Volt Tackle cannot be learned using this method even though it is an egg move. You can easily look up egg move information on sites like Serebii, PokémonDB and Bulbapedia.
  2. Put the 'trainee' Pokémon that you would like to teach, and the 'mentor' Pokémon that knows the desired egg move, in your party. Any Pokémon that knows the correct move will work as the mentor. The two Pokémon don't have to be breeding compatible.
The player's current party menu. Two Pokémon are in the party: a Cinccino and a Maushold.
My trainee is Cinccino and my mentor is Maushold.
  3. The trainee must have an empty moveslot. If it already knows four moves, you need to forget one to make room for the egg move.
Pokémon summary screen displaying the Cinccino's active moveset: Tail Slap, Rock Blast and Bullet Seed. A confirmation message states that the Cinccino has forgotten Tickle.
    I'm going to replace Tickle.
  4. Give the trainee a Mirror Herb to hold.
The player's item menu, showing that the Cinccino has been equipped with a Mirror Herb.
Mirror Herb can be purchased at Delibird Presents in Cascaraffa.
  5. Start a picnic.
The player starts a picnic with the Maushold and Cinccino.
You don't have to do anything during the picnic.
  6. End the picnic.
A prompt asks the player to confirm that they want to end the picnic. The player's cursor highlights 'yes'.
You can end immediately if you'd like.
  7. The trainee should now know the egg move.
Pokémon summary screen displaying the Cinccino's active moveset: Tail Slap, Rock Blast, Bullet Seed and Tidy Up.
    Ta-da! Sesame learned Tidy Up!
  8. Don't forget to take back your Mirror Herb.
The player's current party menu. A confirmation message states that the player has removed the Mirror Herb from Cinccino.
Thanks, Maushold. Now get back in the box.

One final note: this method does not add the egg move permanently to your Pokémon's move memory list. It is only added to the active moveset. If your Pokémon forgets the move, it won't be able to remember it later - but you can follow these same steps again to get the move back. There's no limit on how many times you can repeat the process.

Have fun adding new egg moves to your Pokémon!
